The Outright Attack: When Systems Convert Human Pain into Predictive Data#

From private pain to machine-readable risk#
The first two books show a person turning pain into a theory of the world. Contemporary systems can perform the reverse operation: turn a person’s history, language, relationships, location, purchases, work, and distress into a theory of the person.
The result is a predictive profile. It may estimate credit risk, employee attrition, fraud, political preference, vulnerability, dangerousness, or future behavior. The profile can be useful at a population level and unjust when treated as individual destiny.
Classification becomes environment#
A score does not remain inside a database. It can determine what a person sees, which opportunity appears, how much scrutiny follows, or whether a human decision-maker approaches with suspicion. Recommendation, ranking, and risk systems create a cognitive environment before the person knows a judgment occurred.
This is the outright attack in its most defensible meaning: not one hidden controller, but a convergence of incentives and systems that make inner life measurable, targetable, and actionable.
The feedback loop of grievance#
A person classified as risky may receive fewer opportunities, more monitoring, and less trust. Those consequences can create the behavior the model predicted. The institution then interprets the outcome as validation.
The early books exhibit a human version of the same loop. Rejection produces a theory of persecution; the theory produces provocative behavior; the reaction to the behavior confirms the theory.
Breaking the loop requires contestability and material alternatives.
Synthetic authority and loss of appeal#
AI-generated explanations can make a decision sound more comprehensible without revealing the real causal path. A fluent model may summarize a complex score, but the user still cannot challenge the data, threshold, objective, or institution.
Meaningful appeal requires access to the relevant record, correction of errors, an accountable human with authority, and a remedy that can change the outcome.
Mental privacy is not only neural data#
The mind can be influenced without direct brain access. Attention histories, conversational logs, inferred emotion, social networks, and behavioral patterns can reveal intimate states. A narrow privacy regime that protects only raw neural signals leaves most practical cognitive profiling untouched.
Data minimization, purpose limits, sensitive-inference restrictions, and prohibitions on exploitative personalization are necessary now.
The alternative#
The answer is not destroying the network or placing one perfect authority above it. It is layered governance: transparent objectives, independent testing, plural information sources, rights to know and refuse, human override, incident reporting, and public institutions that treat dignity as real even when it is hard to measure.
The archive offers a warning in two directions. Human pain can become a destructive worldview. Institutional prediction can turn a human being into a permanent suspect. Cognitive liberty insists that neither transformation should be final.
